I glanced at my calendar today only to realize my brother & sister-in-law's 1st wedding anniversary is coming up on April 25. (Happy Anniversary to them, by the way!!) Then, my thoughts immediately went to this sorely neglected blog site and I remembered my last post of photos was from my brother's wedding A YEAR AGO. Talk about a major blog FAIL!

Once 'busy season' hit last year, I got caught up in the excitement and ease of sharing my work on a Facebook fan page and left this blog in the dust. What can I say, I'm a sucker for all those comments and "likes" that you all leave :-) Its fun to see which photos catch one person's eye over another and admittedly...I like spending my time editing images to share with you rather than a long drawn out explanation of what you can clearly see was a fun or interesting photo shoot! After all, a picture is worth a thousand words (and sometimes more)!

So as I prepare to make some long overdue changes and updates to my portfolio site and this blog, I vow to blog more often than a year at a time--even if they are short on words and long on images. I have so many exciting adventures in store for this summer!

To bring you up to speed for the sake of future blog posts, I would like to mention a couple exciting personal things that happened this past year!

My niece Greta was born in August and to say the least -- I can't get enough of her!

Here is a photo I took on Monday. Those big blue eyes just melt my heart!! Dont be surprised if more photos of her pop up on the blog from time to time.

And last but not least, this blog update wouldn't be complete without mentioning two little words: wedding planning! Many of you who I've worked with have met my fiancé John, as he assists with photo shoots and weddings whenever possible. We've formed quite a team, and words can't express how grateful I am to have him in my life. We can't wait for our June 25, 2011 garden wedding in Iowa -- and no, we are NOT photographing our own wedding. :-)

We just got back from shooting an amazing destination wedding in Negril, Jamaica, so I will leave you today with a teaser. (See what I mean about those thousand words!)

angela + ryan {wed}

It's not every weekend I get to be IN a wedding, let alone play the role of Maid of Honor AND photographer, but this particular weekend I was. My brother, Ryan and his beautiful wife Angela tied the knot on April 25th! It was so much fun!!

It was a cold and windy day, but we found an awesome blooming tree in front of a brick building downtown Storm Lake {Iowa}, that made for the perfect backdrop and some of my favorite shots from the day.

In the alley behind the building there was a fire escape... perfect!

Across from the fire escape was the back alley door to a flooring business...

Our sister Kris (who was also a bridesmaid) was in charge of the wedding cake, perfectly matched to our bridesmaid dresses. It turned out awesome.

Our crafty mom did the grooms cake, to honor Ryan's love for John Deere tractors since childhood. Complete with black licorice tires!

It was a fabulous day full of love, family, fun and lots of laughs. Special thanks to my cousin Kathy Olson-Anderson and my boyfriend John for helping with the photography when I needed to switch 'hats' throughout the day. Congratulations Ryan and Angela on your beautiful wedding and for having me be such a big part of it! Welcome to the family, Angela :) {s.j}

kelli + josh {engaged}

Seems like just yesterday I was relatively new to the world of portrait photography (behind the camera, anyway) and Kelli was one of the first high school seniors I photographed. Now she's getting married, and I feel old! :)

Josh and Kelli are planning a late August wedding, but decided to have a spring engagement shoot. It was a cold and rainy day, so most of the shoot was done in the barn at my favorite place, Prairie Pedlar. Luckily towards the end of the shoot, the rain started clearing up so we were able to go outside. What can I say, the umbrella makes a great prop!! {s.j}

Avery is three and LOVES to pretend and play. She was more interested in having me there to play along with her dolls than to photograph her, but this made for some genuine expressions and captured moments of Avery being her creative little self. Her brother Liam is quite the character and joined in the fun too!

Photographing children constantly reminds me of the wonder, exploration, and unlimited creativity we all had ourselves as children. {s.j}

When Dan & Brenda started telling me about their AMAZING wedding location, I couldn't wait to start shooting! Their wedding is coming up quick-- June 13th-- right here in their backyard where we did the engagement photos. Here are some of my favorites from the beautiful evening of the engagement shoot. It was like the stars were aligned -- the setting sun, overcast skies, very little wind, and perfect temperature -- all combined with a fun & gorgeous couple who are clearly head over heels for each other. Below are just a FEW of my favorites...

We had a beautiful spring drive down to Davenport, Iowa recently to witness my college friend Erin's 'tying of the knot' with her adorable guy, Andy. Though I was able to kick back and enjoy their wedding as a 'guest' rather than 'the photographer', I'm sure it comes as no surprise that my camera was in tow anyway. I just love Spring in the Midwest! As soon as the snow melts, everyone starts coming out of hibernation from the long cold winter. The trails are filled with runners and dog walkers. The green grass starts to peep through and trees start to bud. To me, its just a cluster of happiness everywhere I turn. As I mentioned in my last blog posting - with Spring comes the busy 'Wedding Season' and outdoor portrait sessions, my favorite. I added a fab new fixed 50mm lens to my gear bag, and couldn't wait to try it out. Here are a few sessions I did entirely with the new lens -- can't wait to use it at the next wedding! Special thanks to Tess, Jess, and Alyssa for being my guinea pigs!!

All of these shots were taken within short walking distance from my place -- the grass hasn't quite poked through the brush yet, so they look a little fall-like. I just love the lens flare this lens makes -- check out that angelic glow in the last photo!

{spring} has sprung

Spring is in the air and I couldn't be more excited!! Not only does that mean its the start of 'Wedding Season', but I can finally go outside for photo sessions and not have to wear 10 layers of clothing - Hooray! It may be jumping the gun a bit, but my patio is already filled with budding containers of flowers because I just couldn't wait any longer...Happy Spring, everyone!!! {s.j}

Take a look at this sweet little bundle of innocence!! Isn't she beautiful!? Emerson was just 7 days old when we did this photo session. I was hoping for some sleeping photos, but she decided she wanted to stay awake for the whole thing so she woudln't miss out! So, we went with it. Don't let this precious yawn fool you -- she's not sleepy, yet!

Eventually, Emerson gave in to those heavy eyelids and fell peacefully asleep so I was able to capture some more shots I had in mind. Sometimes you just need that perfectly curled up newborn pose!! These next few are my favorite.

{lexi} dog? I don't see a dog!

Meet Lexi. She is the 3 1/2 year old furry four-legged child of my good friends Bobby and Melissa, and I swear she thinks she is human... then again, so do they! I have to admit, her floppy ears do remind me of a little girl with curly brown hair pulled back into pigtails. Needless to say, she's a little bit spoiled, but I can see why. How could anyone say "no" to that face?

During a recent weekend visit with Bobby, Melissa and Lexi, I caught a few adorable shots of Lex 'in action'; capturing her personality and endless energy. Endless is an understatement, especially if it involves her k-o-n-g. Almost anyone with a dog knows what I mean by that. Most of these shots involved dangling her kong toy above my head, hence the intense concentration!

We reminisced about my first photo shoot with Lexi when she was 12 weeks old. Just for old times sake, I am including a couple of those too!

She might just be the cutest English Springer I've ever seen, but I could be just a tad biased. I'll let you be the judge.

the nature of {glass}

During a recent trip to Phoenix, I visited the Desert Botanical Garden's traveling exhibit, The Nature of Glass by glass-man himself, Dale Chihuly. Even though I have studied his work in art classes and admired many art gallery installations, this exhibit was beyond my expectations.

It was amazing to see the bright colorful glass pieces integrated with the desert landscape and mimic the surrounding shapes. Bright sunshine added another interesting element as it illuminated the vibrant pieces of glass, and created even more shapes and texture in the reflection. Interestingly enough, this exhibit can also be viewed at night, as several of the pieces are lit from within. How awesome is that!?

After years of contemplating a tattoo and what it might be, Shelby was given a tattoo as a Christmas gift this year from her brother and sister in law. Talk about a cool gift! Luckily, they have a very talented tattoo artist in their family (a cousin, Garrett) who happens to be local here in the Twin Cities with his shop Live Fast Die Young.
Her vintage Sailor Jerry style tattoo combines Shelby's love for vintage anything, birds and a sweet homage to her parents with their birth year. I just love the bright colors and adorable design - its so cute, and so very Shelby. I wanted to create a beautiful photograph for her, so she wouldn't have to admire it backwards in the mirror all the time! :) {s.j}

I was thrilled when Karie agreed to be my model for testing out a fun idea I've had brewing awhile now. Friends of mine will tell you I have a slight fascination with birds (others may tell you its not so slight) I have these great peacock feathers in a vase in my living room and often wondered how I might incorporate them into a portrait shoot. This shoot is the result of literally 'just goofing around', but we ended up with some fun stuff! Enjoy!! :) {s.j}

Over the holidays, my boyfriend John and I flew to Ohio to visit his family -- with my camera in tow, of course! His parents have a goldendoodle, Izzy -- the coolest dog I've ever seen! Here are just a few of my favorite photos of her and their bird Elvis.

We also had the opportunity to visit their county courthouse, where the interiors have been recently restored. Look how beautiful it is!

I have had the opportunity to photograph Ben since he was 6 months old and Nora since the day she came home from the hospital -- I can't believe Ben is already 4 and Nora is 2! They are such characters in front of the camera, I never know what expression I'm going to capture next. Above are just a FEW of my favorites from their awesome photo shoot on Thanksgiving morning. The light was amazing, and the kids were really getting into having their photo taken!

Every year I try to incorporate some of their favorite 'things' into the photos, whether its a stuffed animal, dump truck, cowboy boots, favorite blanket, or in Ben's case this year -- his tie!

To make a long story somewhat short, Nora is a long-time friend of my good friend Shelby. They met while both studying in Germany as exchange students during high school and have remained great friends ever since. (I can't even begin to name off all the languages they know how to speak- its truly incredible!)

Nora spent this past fall semester in the U.S. studying at Purdue, and visited Shelby here in Minneapolis a few times. She wanted a nice photo to give to her parents in Norway, so we found some time during her last visit. Here are a few favorites from the shoot.

A very cold November afternoon of photos with the Webers at my favorite place, Prairie Pedlar, ended on a WARM note -- gathering around the firepit in their backyard! Needless to say, this was the boys' favorite part of the photo shoot!! It was fun capturing their reactions to the fire, charred marshmallows and gooey S'more goodness, not to mention a great family photo op with the warm fire lighting their faces as they huddled around to keep warm. Amanda found some great matching hats, scarves and gloves for the boys that really brought out the blue in their eyes and made for a neat colorized black and white photo to use on their Christmas card.

Let me just ask one question -- how FUN is this family!? I have known Stephanie & Tom for years and have watched their family grow from just one little bundle of joy to three adorable kids who are a joy just to be around--and photograph! Stephanie brought to my attention recently a quote by Mark Twain that ends with "... to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with."

What an awesome FAMILY quote, and so true!! They sure have fun together, and their joy really shows.

Im not sure exactly how many jumps or shutter snaps it took to snag a perfect 'jumping photo' of the kids, but it is definitely one of my favorites from the afternoon.

Chris and Karin are getting married in August -- unfortunately, we picked a very chilly day to schedule their engagement photos. Chris flew in from Arizona for the weekend, so needless to say he was being a good sport about having his photo taken in the cold Minnesota temps (without a coat on!)

Looking back now at the beautiful fall colors, I think it was a chilly afternoon outdoors well worth it! The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is such a beautiful place for photos! We even managed to find a few new spots I've never utilized as a background before (the row of evergreen trees!) Isn't it neat!?

I can't wait for their wedding in Iowa this summer! I'm sure on their wedding day in August, we will think back on this frosty October afternoon, remember how cold we all were, and secretly wish for some cooler, less humid weather! The grass is always greener on the other side...

Time to update the blog!

First of all I would like to apologize for my lack of updates over the past few months! Orders started rolling in over the holidays and blogging was put on the back burner ... so there are some shoots from as far back as late October I still want to share with you. (You'll spot those by the lack of snow on the ground and beautiful fall leaves!)

Its been an exciting start to 2009 and I'm really looking forward to Spring when I can finally get back outdoors with the camera for photo shoots! Its going to be a busy year, so I hope you check back on the blog from time to time to see what I've been photographing! Thanks to everyone for your business and glowing referrals. I couldn't make all of this happen without wonderful customers like you!

{lauren & matt} destination mexico: part 2

I'm not quite sure how to start this blog posting -- I have so much to say!

First off, let me give you a little background story. In August 2007, I accompanied my Aunt Vicky from Phoenix, AZ on a fabulous cruise of the Mediterranean. We were with a big group of people from the Southwestern US and flew into Venice on the same flight. After exploring Venice all day, we needed to report to the cruise ship port at a specific time. As we boarded the water taxi to take us there, I recognized Lauren and Matt from our flight. I hadn't met them yet, so I didnt' say much... but noticed that Lauren kept looking at the ring on her finger and seemed really quiet, almost in shock. Little did I know, Matt had JUST 'popped the question' a little while before while riding on a gondola! They told the whole romantic proposal story later at dinner on the cruise ship when we all formally met. Throughout the course of the week, we got to know each other a little more. There was a karaoke contest on the ship, so Matt and I had fun taking part in that. (We both made it to the finals!)

So, flash forward to last winter, when I got a call from Lauren & Matt (who live in Dallas, TX) telling me they want to do a small destination wedding with family and friends.. and would like to have me come along for the trip to do their photos! I was more than THRILLED!

I flew into Cancun on a Wednesday, and met up with the group at the resort in Playa del Carmen. On Thursday we went snorkeling (so amazing!) and had a fabulous welcome dinner in the evening. I honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about this group of people. Their hearts are as big as Texas...and their lifelong friendships speak volumes.

Lauren and Matt's big day was Friday. We were all thinking positive weather thoughts as the dark clouds kept lingering in the distance. Despite some serious humidity and ever present clouds, the ceremony was simply storybook. Their love for each other is so evident and REAL, it makes every photo glow. Matt is such a sweetheart, so genuine ... and Lauren is by far the 'spunkiest' bride I have ever photographed! Their personalities compliment each other in every way possible. They are so much fun to be around.

I could have photographed them for hours and hours more, but the sun went down not long after the ceremony. Unfortunately, the rain came pouring down shortly after the reception started so the party was moved into a covered place close by. Everyone was a little soggy, but it didn't put a damper on the fun - everyone danced the night away!

Words can't even describe how great of an experience this was. Lauren & Matt... family and friends; thank you for including me on this fabulous adventure! I will never forget it!

This weekend, they are having a huge reception at Lauren's parent's house in Austin, TX. Knowing them, it will be nothing short of a rockin' good time! Hopefully its a little (okay a lot) less rainy than the reception in Mexico!! :)

Since I'm a few weeks behind on my blog posts, right now I'm looking out the window at bare trees, grey skies and snow. So, I post these photos in memory of the beautiful vivid fall colored leaves, blue skies and crisp 60-70 degree days. Their stay is never long enough, and gone just when we realize what is inevitably coming next. *dunhh dunhh dunhh* SNOW! {s.j}

We knew it was meant to be, so we waited... and waited... and waited. Then my brother FINALLY proposed to his adorable girlfriend Angela! We couldn't be MORE excited to have another wedding in the family and to welcome her into our crazy clan!!!

An April wedding is in the works, so they decided to do Fall engagement photos. They made the drive up to Minneapolis for a visit and a fun engagement photo shoot at Minnehaha Falls.

The leaves were incredible!!
We had quite a bit of rain to deal with the entire second half of the shoot, but it helped clear all of the people off the rocks and around the waterfall so I could score this awesome shot! It was still pouring rain, but you can hardly tell! If only someone would have taken a picture of me squatting and balancing one foot on a little rock in the middle of the stream. Anything for a great shot, right!??! I think the onlookers were just waiting for me to fall, camera and all, flat on my butt right into the water! Thank goodness that didn't happen! :)

I have never seen my brother so happy and cant wait for these two to finally tie the knot!

Meet my adorable friend Alyssa.

She recently had a birthday and decided it was the perfect time to go for a completely different 'look'. After much thought and a promising consultation, she scheduled her appointment. I'm so excited to report that she also donated 11 inches of hair to Locks of Love! How awesome!

Immediately after leaving the salon, she drove to my place for a photo shoot so we could document her cute new look. Isn't it great!! You have to be careful when telling your girl friends that their new style makes them look 'older'... but I'd like to think we are young enough where 'older' is still interpreted in a positive way -- you know, more 'grown up'. At least I hope so, because my immediate reaction was "You look older! I love it!!!"

On a side note, I was excited to do my first photo shoot in the backyard area of my new place here in St Louis Park. It sits next to a 100-acre nature preserve that is just BEAUTIFUL!

This wasn't exactly the first time I've photographed Alyssa, so I even have some before images to include in this blog! The 'long hair' photos were taken last February when Alyssa came to visit me in Phoenix. (I was living there for the winter)

and *drumroll please* here is her sassy new look!

kate & katie {class of 2009}

I had the pleasure of photographing Kate and Katie for their senior portraits. Both of them wanted to wait for the fall colors, and picked the PERFECT week!

Kate was such a pleasure to work with - I really wanted to focus on capturing her easy going nature and sweet personality!

Her family has a beautiful dog, Miles. I just love this interaction photo! As you can see, the love goes both ways!

We did most of the photos in her back yard and around their beautiful home, then finished just down the street where the trees looked like a colorful painting!

I know I always mention weather in my blog, but Katie's photo shoot was scheduled on THE most perfect weather day anyone could have asked for! It was overcast, but not too grey, warm with a light cool breeze, and the trees were in their PRIME for color. We walked around downtown Excelsior and found some really neat spots (and enjoyed the beautiful weather!)

Okay, I admit--I have been a huge slacker with my blog posts over the past month. That is going to change... right now!

There have been so many FUN photo shoots, I can't skip over sharing ANY of them with you! The first one is a family photo shoot I did back in Iowa. Warren and Nancy are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, so they pulled together the ENTIRE family for a fun photo shoot on their farm.

I have to admit, its not easy to round up 11 kids, get them in place and have them all look at the camera at the same time. Usually I resort to the magic of photoshop to swap heads and create the perfect image. Somehow on this day, I managed to catch everyone looking great, all at the same time!

There are just a few more priceless images from that afternoon.

I recently made a trip back to Iowa to visit my parents and do a big family photo shoot (blog coming soon!) It's been awhile since I've made a trip back to the farm in the thick of harvest season. I forgot just how beautiful it can be.

I tagged along with my dad for a few rounds in the combine. I just love this shot of him watching the beans move from the combine to the wagon. "Another good crop," he smiled and said after I snapped this.

I have to admit there was a small bit of strategic placement to get this shot. I wanted to capture the sun setting just behind the combine, so I rode out in the middle of the field with Dad and asked him to stop so I could run ahead in the bean rows and capture this amazing scene. The coolest thing is not only the clouds and sunset, but the way the bean rows are lit up from behind and our family's farm-skyline, as you could call it, in the background.

I like to call this one "The Farmer's View" -- from inside the combine. Love that Iowa landscape!

Harvest season just amazes me. After meticulously planning, planting and watching over their crops all summer, the farmers get to reap the harvest and complete the process for one more year. It's all based on the grace of God -- whether or not it rains too much or freezes too early. The magic of planting a seed, watching it grow and harvesting the crop is just another amazing part in the circle of life! Sometimes we just don't take the time to sit back and think about how incredible it really is.

I met Tony and Jackie at Matt & Molly's wedding this past spring and was so excited when they asked me to be the photographer for their Sept 2009 wedding.

They are the most adorable couple!!

We met up on a Friday for their engagement photo shoot at St Anthony Main. Despite a brief rain shower, the cloudy skies made for PERFECT lighting and really added to the scenery (not to mention a great shot of them with an umbrella!)

As we were walking back towards the car, I looked up and saw this awesome scene. Though Tony wasn't sure what to think of the dramatic pose at first, I told him just to 'humor me' and try it for a few shots. It turned out AWESOME. So, thanks goes to Tony for playing along!!

I can't WAIT for their big day! We are going to have so much fun-- I might even get Tony to do some dramatic model poses again :-)

I met up with Kirstin at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on a beautiful afternoon for her senior photo portrait session. There was this wee little frog about the size of my thumbprint in the tree next to where Kirstin was posing for her first set of photos! At the end of the shoot, we checked back to see if it

was still there.. and it was! After it hopped down to a nearby branch I snapped this last photo.

Kirstin really had a great 'serious' look. Very sassy, as I like to say. :) It was such a fun photo shoot!I keep finding awesome new places all around the Arboretum for photographing. That place is just incredible!

Colin and Trisha had an absolutely stunning wedding over Labor Day weekend! Unlike the day of their engagement photos, they were blessed with the most perfect weather (though I doubt any amount of rain could have put a damper on their big day!!)

There were so many wonderful moments and details to capture throughout the entire day, I could hardly choose which ones to include in this blog. So, I have also created a 'featured wedding' gallery under the {fine art} portion of my website to showcase some of my favorite images from their wedding.

Light and color were such fabulous elements of this wedding! Aside from the flowers adding amazing color to the day, the sunlight shining through stained glass windows in the church made for some unbelievable shots before the wedding. The lighting on the dance floor was great, too! The colorful lighting enhanced the fun mood of the evening and great entertainment by the band.

It was so much fun being a part of this wedding - Congratulations, Colin and Trisha, on many many years of wedded bliss!

Im so happy for you both!

I was thrilled to hear from Anna when she and her friend Tricia were looking for opera head shots. There is a fine line in portraiture between 'cheesy' and 'traditional' while still allowing a spark of personality and creativeness to shine through. They weren't just looking for typical 'sit in front of a grey backdrop' grade-school-portrait-style head shots (nor do I even DO these kind of portraits), but still needed to stay within a certain style guide for what is acceptable in their profession. After discussing different options and ideas, and trying a few different backdrops, lighting styles and clothing choices, I think they ended up with exactly the happy medium we were all going for with this shoot. Who knew a a normally "boring" head shot session could be so much fun!

Kids are back in school, and college football season is in full swing - that could only mean only one thing. No... not that NBC starts airing new episodes of Grey's Anatomy soon (well, that too) but im talking about my FAVORITE part of Fall - the amazingly beautiful leaves in Minnesota!

I captured a series of fall leaf photos a few years back while on a nature walk in the peak 'color' time of the season.
I couldn't pick just one, so put together this little montage.

Doesn't this picture just make you think of apple orchard visits, pumpkin carving and jumping into a big pile of crunchy fall leaves!? It wont be long now until the leaves start changing again -- I can't wait! {s.j}

Back in June, I captured some beautiful maternity photos of Bethany along with twins Hailey and Bradyn. On July 28th, Brooke Katelyn was welcomed into the world! It was so neat to see the twins interacting with their tiny new baby sister, kissing her gently and being ever so careful. Brooke is absolutely perfect! Here are just a few of my favorites. Its been a crazy busy past couple weeks, and my blogging has been slacking! I plan to make up for it today with several blog posts. To simplify things, I'm combining these four high school seniors in one big blog!

Mike's photo shoot was at St Anthony Main east of Downtown Minneapolis. It was a windy day, but we found some great spots with wonderful light! Doesn't he have such a great smile!?

Jared and his mom came all the way from Carlisle, Iowa for his photo shoot! They met me at St Anthony Main for his photos and we had the most beautiful, glorious light and weather! He was up for an urban "grungy" looking background - I was thrilled! These buildings have so much character...I just love the look!

I went to Waconia for Katie's senior photo shoot. Her mom had a great location picked out at a coworker's acreage a few miles away. It was FABULOUS -- a photographer's dream! Flowers, ponds, willow trees, bridges... awesome. Katie was so wonderful to work with...I had a hard time picking out just a few my favorites to include in this blog!!

A few days later I went to Lyle's farm in Young America, MN. Ive never traveled this far west of the Cities in Minnesota before... but come to find out, there are some GREAT spots for photos out there! We went just down the road to a park, then to Lyle's backyard for a few photos with his dogs and horses.

They have such an amazing landscape view, i couldn't resist this photo of the horses and looming storm clouds (that luckily held off rain until after we were done with the shoot!)

{fine art} friday: I35 tree

Did this past week fly by or what!? Im busy photographing a lot of high school seniors lately and its been so much fun! This weekend I'm heading south to photograph Colin & Trisha's wedding in Storm Lake, Iowa. It sounds like the weather is going to be just beautiful! (always a plus)

In honor of the drive to Iowa, I would like to dedicate this week's {fine art} friday post to one of my favorite art prints.

Since moving to Minneapolis in July of 2004 from Iowa, I have made the trek back and forth from my 'home land' to 'the city' more times than I can remember. As most of you know, a good chunk of that drive involves Interstate 35, a pretty boring stretch of road flanked mostly by cornfields and billboards. Im not sure why, but just north of Mason City, IA there is one specific tree that has always caught my attention -- whether I was watching for it or not -- every single time I pass by. Its an old evergreen in the back in a field that only has branches on one side. Eventually I started calling it 'my tree' and made note of it when passing by. One of those times, I made a point to stop off and take a photo just as a the sun was setting. It was perfect!

Two interesting things to mention. First off, I was thrilled to print and frame this photo for my apartment. When my friend Shelby stopped by for a visit, I showed off my newly framed print and she immediately recognized the tree, exclaiming "MY TREE!" I was caught a little off guard, but agreed to share ownership of the tree. ha! I found it interesting that the tree stood out to more people than just me, and was recognizable out of context. Keep in mind, there are SEVERAL trees along this interstate, so how interesting that this one would stand out from the rest. If any of you have noticed this tree before too, please post a comment - I would be interested to know!

Secondly, I was sad to find out this past winter during a terrible ice storm the entire top portion of the tree broke off. The bottom half still stands strong, but I am so happy to have captured the tree the previous summer in all its beautiful glory.

state fair

Every summer, Minnesotans will gather at the Minnesota State Fair. Whether its to show their prized animals in a contest, to view the newly sculpted butter busts of Princess Kay of the Milky Way, or to taste any and every kind of food, usually fried... and almost always on a stick.

As always, my camera was in tow last Sunday when visiting the fair. Here are just a few of my favorite fair photos, though its just not the same without smelling the intoxicating mixture of cow dung, cotton candy and deep fried cheese.

New at the fair this year was the surprisingly delicious chocolate-dipped bacon called "Pig Lickers"

I heard the Iowa State fair had a life size butter sculpture of Iowa-native Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson. Only in the midwest would we have our honored individuals carved in butter! {sj}

Doorways are completely fascinating to me.
I've mentioned last year's cruise of the Mediterranean before, and you may have noticed throughout the {fine art} galleries a recurring theme of door and window photos. Much like the "if these walls could talk" idea; I often wonder, "what if these doorways could talk?" First of all, they probably wouldn't speak English, but just think of the stories they would have! Call me crazy, but if you look close, each one has an individual personality and a definite history.

I have uploaded a {fine art} gallery dedicated solely to my fascination of doors and windows. You will find some of the same images throughout the travel galleries, but its fun to see them all in one place. In honor of that, I have put together this poster with 20 of my favorite door images from across the Mediterranean.

{fine art} friday: daffodils & irises

Early this spring I was playing around with my lensbaby lens with the macro attachment on a lazy afternoon. The local grocery store had a spring sale on daffodils and irises, so I happened to have some handy! I've had the lensbaby for a couple years now, and this was honestly the first time I have used the macro (extreme close up)lens attachment. After some photoshop magic, and texture overlays... I think these turned out pretty neat.

I have decided to start a weekly Friday post to showcase a piece of art from the {fine art} section of my website and tell the story behind it. I will start off with one my most favorite (and requested) art photos, taken in Dubrovnik, Croatia almost exactly a year ago.

While riding on a tour bus after a long, amazing day of sightseeing, wine tasting and photo-taking I wasn't really on the lookout for more photo-ops. I was visiting with some fellow travelers about our day when all of the sudden I randomly glanced out the window and saw this amazing, lone tree. It was as if time stopped for a moment as I quickly scrambled to grab up my camera (still on, and miraculously set to the right speed!) to take a one-shot chance at capturing this scene through the bus window. It all happened in a matter of 3 seconds, and I honestly didn't think the shot had turned out at first. So many factors needed to be in place, especially dealing with a moving bus, low light, the potential glass glare and distortion of shooting through a window. The minute I saw this single frame show up on the computer screen.. I knew it was pure gold. No motion blur... no glass glare.. just nature's perfection at its finest.

After a few minor photoshop adjustments to color and contrast, I added a canvas texture overlay to frame the image, add in some playful rust-colored tones and enhance the overall mood.

It still amazes me to think about how quick this perfect shot was captured, yet how long this image will remain frozen in time forever as a piece of art, and memory of a wonderful sightseeing adventure.

derek+lisa=love

This weekend's wedding in Bloomington, IL was so wonderful! Not only did I get to carpool there with a fun bunch of friends, but it was a weekend-long gathering full of laughter and love. Derek and Lisa tied the knot earlier in the afternoon (2pm) so it gave us a lot of time after the wedding for photos at the park before arriving at the reception. Everyone danced the night away (even Derek's adorable grandparents joined in!) and had a wonderful time. Now they are off to London & Paris for a fabulous honeymoon!! After such a long time (I'm actually embarrassed to say exactly how long!) I can finally cross "re-design website" off my eternal list of things TO DO. Seriously, I can't even explain how huge of a task this has been, which is why it ultimately kept getting put on the back burner. I don't even remember the last time I gave someone my website address without a pang of guilt, knowing how out of date my online samples were.

So, without further adieu...

I am proud to announce that sara-jayne.com finally has a brand spankin' new look!!!

Thanks to the phenomenon that is blogging, I will always have up-to-date samples out there for everyone to check out! I mean, who doesn't like to keep tabs on what people have been up to? I'd like to blame it on reality TV and/or Myspace and Facebook, but I think society has always anxious to jump on the gossip train. Hence, the {gossip} tab linking my main website to this blog.

New features include an online shopping cart for print purchases from fine art and client galleries, credit card and Paypal payment capabilities (a very exciting upgrade!), and client proofing galleries in slide show format. You can even tag your favorite images as you browse! The coming weeks will bring more informational additions, a music player, site tweaking and even more gallery samples, so keep checking back for updates and don't be afraid to let me know what you think--critique is always welcome!

At least these last few items are small tasks in the grand scheme of this daunting project. Not necessarily big enough to have a spot on the TO DO list any more. So, the time has finally come... to grab that big fat Sharpie and do something I've been wanting to do for a LONG while now! What a wonderful feeling!!!

This weekend, I am photographing Derek & Lisa's big day in Bloomington, Illinois!

Here are a few of my favorite shots from their engagement shoot on a VERY cold day back in November on the Iowa State campus.

Derek had the genius idea to set up a website for their wedding guests. It has online RSVP, information on accommodations, an auto map generator for directions, information about their wedding party, vendors and a photo gallery. I designed the look/pages and he made it all work.

I'm looking forward to a fun weekend in Bloomington and hopefully weather that is much less extreme than when we met up for engagement photos!! {sj}

It's not often, especially this time of year, that photographers will take time out of their busy schedules to do a photo shoot JUST for art's sake.... perhaps something a little off the wall or something a customer would never ask for. We all KNOW we should set aside time for these "art shoots" if only to keep fresh in our heads why we love photography so much. A little over a week ago, I got together with Jayson to do just that. He's been tossing around the idea for a 'returned-from-the-dead bride' photo shoot for awhile now, so we scheduled some time for it! His employee, Marissa, agreed to put on an old wedding dress and 'goth up' her makeup. We headed to a cemetery near Jayson's studio and hoped people wouldn't think we were there to cause trouble! The light was just PERFECT!

I was thinking of waiting for a more appropriate 'Halloween time' to share them (rather than now, in the midst of wedding season) Then I thought about it some more and figured, hey-- why not!?

Kind of freaky? Yes, I agree. But its all in good fun!

On a side note, these gave me the perfect opportunity to play with some new textures and actions I recently purchased from one of my favorite photographers, Michelle Black. She is a photographic ROCK STAR and sells some wonderful resources for photographers!

I caught some cool shots of Marissa's precious dog Jack, too--what a face!!

A couple years ago, I photographed Heather and two friends for some winter fun photos in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. We had so much fun, I was just thrilled when she asked me to do her senior photos! Late Monday afternoon, we went to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum where walking paths led through fields of flowers, waterfalls, fountains, and much more! As the sun set, the light kept getting more perfect. Heather, her mom and I had so much fun wandering around finding great little spots. I have photographed Anna & Brooks for the past few years, and keep asking myself why I didn't suggest a shoot at the gardens earlier! We had a few little rain delays, but luckily they were brief and it gave me a chance to use the beautiful light spilling into the barn through the open door.

They have both become pretty comfortable in front of the camera - so much fun to photograph!

This time their cousin Chase joined in the fun too.

During my week long stay in Iowa, I was able to schedule a few photo shoots at my favorite location, The Prairie Pedlar. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place, and owners Jack & Jane. It is truly a photographer's wonderland!

The first photo shoot was a combination of senior and family photos. I have known the Wallace family since I was born, so it was fun to see them all again and catch up. I can hardly believe their youngest, Aaron is going to be a SENIOR--I remember when he was born! He brought along his tractor, which made for some great shots along with the barn scenery around the gardens that made a perfect fit for this farm family!

I also can not believe their oldest, Jenny has TWO kids--here have the years gone!? Tori was a wonderful little model and had fun playing in all of the flowers at the garden.

Seems like just yesterday it was us running around the farm playing! {sj}

My second cousin Kris was married in June to Sarah, quite possibly the sweetest person I've ever met!

They found a great location in Omaha for outdoor photos at a park near the UNO campus (where they both went for college) and the weather could not have been more perfect! I had so much fun catching up with family and meeting Sarah's. It was truly a joy to photograph their beautiful day and catch all the special moments! Welcome to the family, Sarah! {sj}

Reggie, Sarah and I go way back... but I have always known them separately! Sarah and I went to grade school and high school together, while Reggie and I knew each other through 4-H and showing pigs at the county fair. Good news travels fast in a small town, so when I heard of their budding relationship, I kept thinking to myself, " why didn't I think of setting them up long ago!?" Regardless, they ended up finding each other and just make the most perfect, delightful couple. I swear I've never seen either of them smile so big as they did on Saturday! *too cute!*

On the way to the reception, we stopped off at their farm. Though Sarah turned down the opportunity to take a photo with some pigs, she jumped at the opportunity to frolic through the alfalfa field. What a great sport!! Those ended up being some of my most favorite photos from their big day!

I hope you all had a fantastic Independence Day weekend! I traveled to Iowa and spent Friday with my family and friends - it was the most wonderful & relaxing day complete with a small town parade, car show, napping in a hammock, great food, catching up with old friends, taking in lake views, sparklers, and topping off the evening by watching the fireworks from a boat in the middle of the lake. As always, my camera was in tow - and became a hit when teaching my friends about the artistic value of fireworks and 30 second exposures. Three years ago, I photographed Mandy's younger sister's wedding, and was thrilled when Mandy called and asked me to photograph her and Kurt's. It was the most b-eau-ti-ful day in Des Moines, IA! First, we headed over to the state Capitol building. Beautiful blue skies filled with puffy clouds against the Des Moines skyline - just perfect! For the longest time my friend Brad and I have been wanting to do a theatrical-type shoot, recreating an old movie poster. He suggested the late-1950's film Pal Joey starring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. Driving back to Minneapolis from my winter in Phoenix, we neared the exit for Winslow, Arizona along the interstate. A bug of nostalgia struck me as the Eagles song "Take It Easy" started playing in my head. I was determined to grab a photo actually 'standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona' but we couldn't seem to find the landmark spot (err, corner) as advertised on the interstate billboard. There wasn't much to the town itself, but nevertheless we passed by this run down gas station and it was like a bolt of lightning struck down and told me to stop and take a photo. Its not every day you come across a scene as picture perfect as this. Call me crazy, but I still can't look at these photos without getting that darn song stuck in my head! {sj}

I did this fun photo shoot back in March, but wanted to blog about it and share some favorites. Seri and I know each other from growing up (mostly from that long hot week spent every summer at the county fair!) and she is currently living in Phoenix, where I spent this past winter. The shots with the strawberry were completely spontaneous (I must have watched Across the Universe one too many times that week!?) and despite the fact we were both laughing about how corny the strawberry poses seemed during the shoot--they ended up being some of my favorites! I know Kathryn through a friend, and was tickled pink when she asked me to take her latest head shots. She drove all the way from Chicago to Minneapolis for this photo shoot, but we had so much fun! (she said it was worth every minute of the crazy traffic she had to deal with to get here)

Despite her wonderful comedic personality, I ended up liking some of the serious expressions the most!

Colin and I grew up just down the road from each other and were in the same high school graduating class (all 42 of us!) I was thrilled to hear the news of his engagement to Trisha, and even more excited when they asked me to capture their wedding day coming up in August. Trisha's parents' lake home made for the most perfect setting for their engagement photos. Despite a huge thunderstorm before and after our scheduled shoot time, Mother Nature decided to give us a little break. The light was perfect, and it was fun catching up with these two as well. Congrats on your engagement, and I can't WAIT for the big day! Lets hope we are just as lucky, again, with cooperative weather!

I met up with Brent & Megan on the Iowa State campus for their engagement photos (Brent is an alum!) Despite the hot, humid day, the light couldn't have been more perfect in all of my favorites places to photo around campus. Im really looking forward to their July 12th garden wedding at the Prairie Pedlar in Odebolt, Iowa. {sj}

These two could not have ordered better weather for their May 17th wedding! I had the most wonderful time capturing their beautiful day - and what a FUN (and huge) wedding party! We had the coolest backyard and front porch setting for most of the outdoor photos, thanks to Matt's parents! Best wishes to Matt & Molly on many years of wedded bliss!! {sj}

Armin & Dawn are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in July, so they rounded up the whole family for a photo shoot on the Iowa State campus in Ames. I had such a fun morning exploring campus (my alma mater!) for great photo locations, capturing fun interactions and timeless family portraits. Josh and Bethany are expecting their third child! As mom's belly continues to grow, I think twins Bradyn and Hailey are starting to understand that soon their lives will never be the same! I cant' wait to photograph their new little bundle of joy in August!! {sj}

I am SO excited to start this blog!

It's been on that eternal To Do list for over a year, but i woke up this morning with the 'blog bug' and said to myself "Sara, its time!" So here we go...

There is a brand spankin' new "sara jayne photography" website in the works, but until it is ready I will use this blog to update everyone on my latest and most exciting adventures!
